 Flea & Tick Prevention
« Thread Started on Mar 29, 2006, 1:43pm »

Well it is that time of year and I am once again on the fence about putting all those chemicals on my dogs for tick prevention.

What natural products do some of you use that you would personally recommend?
Thanks Beth

Hi Beth!

I was talking with one of my clients yesterday and she was telling me there is a spray that she buys from Whole Foods that she REALLY liked using last year. She does tons of garlic in the food, and then sprays daily or when she anticipated tick exposure with this stuff from Whole Foods.

I have asked her to get me the name of it, so will post it when I get it, OK??

If anyone else knows of anything, please share!!

Thanks!
Sharon

Sharon, What's your opinion of using the Frontline or any other flea and/or tick prevention? I remember at one of your seminars you said that if you used it, you could go 5 - 6 weeks between doses.

Thanks, Paula

Hi Paula!

I do think that, much as I hate Frontline for the chemical aspect, that if the animals test Ok for it, AND we keep a monitor on their organs AND you stretch it out 6 or 7 or 8 weeks (as long as possible before ticks get bad on them again), then it is certainly effective against those nasty ticks. And you have to weigh that against the nasty diseases those @*&!^#&% ticks carry! :) So---I do use it on my own boys, as we go walking in the woods a lot, and it certainly helps keep ticks off them. I do it about every 6 or 7 weeks, and monitor them through periodic ART testing.

Also, of these particular products, I stick with Frontline, as Advantix and Frontline Plus have even more chemicals in them....so, I figure if you're going to do it, then use one with just one chemical, not multiple chemicals. :)

Boy does this discussion hit home. As Sharon can tell you, my Astro (golden ret) has been on and off antibiotics for two years now. Two years ago when we first started with Sharon, he was diagnosed with Lyme and on antibiotics for seven months. I always know when the Lyme starts to act up because he is stiff when he first gets up. A good round of antibiotics takes that away. Thank God for Freddie's kit. :)

For some reason goldens are prone to kidney failure from Lyme. Two of Astro's half littermates and a littermate died from kidney failure. All three tested positive for Lyme. His breeder believes one of them could have died from the vaccine because he was vaccinated (after his owner was told NOT to) for Lyme a couple months before he died. This is why many vets do not recommend the Lyme vaccine for goldens but others still do. But the best vets don't recommend it at all for any breed. :) It bothers me that the human vaccine was taken off the market but the canine vaccine is okay. Hmmm.... since more research is done on human vaccines vs canine vaccines, I'm very troubled by this.

So I'm very careful now and the first sign of anything, I tell Sharon. I urge all of you to do the same. Tick borne diseases are scary and can kill. Please don't ever think your dog is getting old or slowing down. Have him checked. A golden fancier put up the following page re: tick borne diseases. http://users2.ev1.net/~vintage/tick.htm She's done a lot of research and I found this page to be very informative. I don't agree with her statement that doxy is the best because I personally know that Astro's body prefers different antibiotics. He does not test for doxy but she leans towards traditional medicine so I can understand her saying that and also her discussion re: tests. I can see how ART picks up tick diseases before blood tests. Sharon, I'd be very interested in your opinion re: this information.

Ticks are out already. I had to Frontline my cat because he goes out and I already found a tick on him. I have not started my dogs yet. I'd be very interested in the product from Whole Foods as well. If any of you can have guinea hens, get a few. They LOVE ticks but are very, very loud.

Hi Maggie---

I will try this again----just had a looong reply written and then it disappeared. GRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!! I HATE computers!! especially because my typing sucks.

So will try again, but in an abbreviated version. I thought the article you linked to by and large had good information, but some minor and some major errors. minor as example is the statement about only doxycylcine, as many conventional vets also use amoxicillin, and I have found several that test for Zithromax. More major is that she stated that the Idexx Sanp3 test can not differentiate between vaccinates and unvaccinated animals. This is not true---the Snap3 uses IR6 which reacts only with a certain lipoprotein that gets transmuted while in the tick...and obviously this doesn't happen from the vaccine..no tick involved!! So, the IR6 would react with the tick-transformed lipoprotein and show positive, but would show nothing in a test on a vaccinated dog.

Otherwise, I did think that there was a lot of good information in that article. That is the problem with the internet....unless articles are freom really reliable sources, there is good and bad mixed in with many articles. Fine if you can sort it out, but otherwise you just have to be careful.

Thanks for posting the link, though, as I did think 75% or more was pretty good!

Also, to clarify, it is NOT just Goldens that get the Lyme nephritis (kidney problems)...other breeds can get this as well, unfortunately.

I have now finally come across a few different sprays that are all 100% essential oils, so wanted to pass these along. These would have to be sprayed on the animal each time they go out for the day in the woods, or tick-loaded areas.

One is Tick Guard (online at Life's Vigor.com, I believe---or jus googel Tick Guard).....another is Herbal Armour (<----sold at Whole Foods)....another is Bug Off from earthanimal.com.

I have used the Herbal Aromour both on myself and my 2 Corgis, and have been pretty impressed with it, and have heard good reports on the other 2.

It is that time of year again & my stomach is getting that knot when I think about Frontline, etc. I am always torn b/c I am soooo paranoid about my dogs getting lyme (as well as the other tick born illnesses), as RI is considered an endemic area but then again those checmicals make me nervous. My question is to those of you that were using the natural products from Whole Foods, etc. are you still happy w/ those products? Will you use them this year? Thanks.
