 Heartguard/ Frontline, etc.
« Thread Started on Oct 8, 2006, 5:18pm »

Hello, how are you? I was wondering....How do you feel about the use of monthly heartworm and flea tick/preventive meds? Also, there is always debate about the use of generic meds in the human medicine world, what is your feeling on the use of generics for animals? For instance, there a few generic/cheaper alternatives to the brand Heartguard, Frontline and Advantix, but I'm always afraid that they will not provide the same level of protection. Thanks!

Hi Kate!!

Sorry for the delay in replying! I have been so absorbed in preparing my veterinary seminar of late, that I haven't had time for much else! :)

I use monthly heartworm, and flea/tick spot on meds only if the animals test OK for them. Then if they do, I stretch the applications/doses out as long as possible--usually about 6-7 weeks, rather than the 28 days that the label tells you to do.

Also, I have people use some of the various herbal sprays (such as Herbal Armour, or Tcik Guard, or Bug Off) for flea/tick prevention if the animals can't tolerate topicals, or if the owners do not want to use the topicals.

If the topicals ARE used, I do NOT like the generics. Generics are OK for some things, but not for this in my opinion/experience.

Hope this helps!!
Sharon
